Post-Traumatic Rhinoplasty in Metairie, LA

straight nose

As our nose has the most prominent position on our face, it is unsurprising that nose-related injuries are fairly common. There can be many different ways in which your nose can be damaged. Sporting accidents, trips and falls, fighting, car accidents and even walking into a door can all cause your nose to break or suffer significant injury, and sometimes these are severe enough to have serious repercussions for both the way your nose looks and how effectively it works as part of your respiratory system. If this happens, you may be recommended to consider post-traumatic rhinoplasty to restore the appearance and function of your nose.

What is post-traumatic rhinoplasty and how does it differ from regular rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is arguably one of the most complex forms of cosmetic surgery. This is because the nose is a very delicate part of the human anatomy and because, as the central feature on our face, any changes made are extremely obvious and impossible to hide. Altering the nose, even subtly, can also have a dramatic effect on a person’s appearance. This means that there is extra pressure to get the changes just right so that the patient’s appearance is enhanced but not unnatural.

In most cases, conventional rhinoplasty is performed with a purely cosmetic goal in mind. However, there are also some forms of rhinoplasty that are more functional in design.

Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is recommended for patients who have previously experienced a traumatic injury or another medical issue that has affected their nose. This may have caused damage to the bone and/or cartilage and compromised the patient’s airway, as well as of course affecting the cosmetic appearance of the nose. Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is carried out with the primary focus of restoring the function and appearance of the nose.

What will happen during my post-traumatic rhinoplasty?

Every patient is different and has very different requirements. For this reason, each rhinoplasty, whether post-traumatic or otherwise, is tailored to the specific needs of the individual. During your consultation, we will assess your nose and the damage that it has sustained and make recommendations as to the best way to help reconstruct your nose so that it works effectively and looks completely natural and in keeping with your other facial features. These recommendations will be explained to you so that you know what you can reasonably expect from your procedure.

How soon after an injury can I undergo post-traumatic rhinoplasty?

If your injuries are fairly minor, it may be possible for you to undergo post-traumatic rhinoplasty fairly quickly after they occurred. However, if you have suffered from a much more complex trauma, we may recommend that you are given longer to heal and recover before we consider extensive correctional surgery to address the physical and cosmetic issues with your nose. We will be happy to advise you when it would be a suitable time for you to undergo your restorative procedure.
